Have you heard about us and would like to volunteer your services? Read on to find out what volunteering involves.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of healthcare backgrounds. Our volunteers are mainly doctors, dentists, nurses and paramedics -all that we ask is that you have had some experience of dealing with the consequences of violence in the course of your career. We have all grades of staff on our volunteer list and we provide training for you before you go into schools. If you don’t fall into one of those categories but would like to help and feel that your experience would be useful please just get in touch. We find that pupils respond best to those who can speak from personal experience. You will often find yourself in the classroom with a 'medic' from a totally different specialty.

How do I volunteer?

Either email us our Schools Co-ordinator Isabel Davis at isabel.davis@vruscotland.pnn.police.uk or you can phone 0141 532 5816. We will then add you to our volunteer list and send you details of our next training event. Training events are held in Glasgow and Dundee a couple of times a year.

What would volunteering involve?

As a volunteer of MAV you will have the opportunity to speak to school pupils (usually 2nd year) about the consequences of violence from our perspective and how to keep themselves safe. Each visit lasts an hour. There is a structured lesson plan which involves showing a DVD called "Your Choice" lasting 18 minutes followed by group discussions then a summary, there is very little preparation involved.

You will receive an email when schools request a visit, we use Doodle to allow you choose times that suit you and to see who else has signed up. If you sign up for a school you will be sent a reminder just before your visit with details of the address, who to contact when you get there and the email address of the person going with you.

On most occasions your lesson will be along with another health care professional. We would generally ask that you are able to commit to three or four school visits per year, if you choose schools near to your home or work the time involved for you can be minimal but you could make a big difference.
